Cllr Waseem Zaffar, Cabinet Member for Transparency, Openness and Equality at Birmingham City Council, has responded in the aftermath of yesterday’s murder of a priest in Rouen to explain the support being offered to faith-based settings closer to home:
“Understandably everyone is still shocked and saddened by the murder of Father Jacques Hamel, who is described as a peaceful and devoted man of religion by everyone who knew him.
“Birmingham has great interfaith relations and therefore stands shoulder to shoulder with France after yet another tragic event.
“I am pleased that the National Police Chiefs’ Council here in the UK has reiterated its advice to places of worship to be vigilant and it is also encouraging the Government is reported as announcing funding to bolster security in such settings.
“Locally, Faith Associates, working with the city council, has reviewed and reissued its toolkit for faith groups in Birmingham and beyond. I would urge anyone with an interest to take a look at their excellent documentation.”
